The airport that some bookings call 'Düsseldorf-Weeze' is not in Düsseldorf. Named Flughafen Niederrhein when it opened and now known as Airport Weeze, it has the code NRN, and a glance at the map clears up any doubt: Weeze lies in Germany's Lower Rhine region, close to the Dutch border and south of Nijmegen, while Düsseldorf is more than 80 kilometres away by road. The airlines that fly there nevertheless sell it as Düsseldorf-Weeze. Düsseldorf's international airport, for its part, has the code DUS and a page of its own: before booking anything, check which one is on your ticket.
The mismatch stems from the site's history: a former military base set in open countryside and converted for civil aviation. Today the airport relies on low-cost airlines, with a single terminal and routes serving mainly the Iberian Peninsula, the Balearics and Morocco. It has no railway station: public transport comes down to a few regional buses and a shuttle to Düsseldorf. From Belgium, reaching Weeze without a car is therefore quite an expedition, especially with suitcases and a plane to catch at daybreak.
A 06:00 flight from Weeze starts the evening before. The airport asks passengers to be at the terminal two and a half hours before take-off, and the drive from Brussels takes roughly as long without traffic, so the driver picks you up at around 00:30. Depending on traffic, the route takes the E314 via Hasselt and Dutch Limburg, or goes via Antwerp and Eindhoven, before crossing the Meuse and entering Germany a few kilometres from the terminal. 'Düsseldorf-Weeze' is simply a marketing name. Check the three-letter code on your ticket before booking the transfer: it determines the address the driver has to go to, and a mix-up would cost you a good hour of extra travel.

The airport recommends being at the terminal two and a half hours before take-off, i.e. at 03:30, and the drive from Brussels takes a little over two and a half hours without traffic. Why is Weeze airport so isolated?+
Because it occupies the former RAF Laarbruch, a base operated by the Royal Air Force during the Cold War among the fields of the Lower Rhine, then handed back to Germany at the end of the 1990s. Civil aviation moved in at the start of the 2000s, almost exclusively with low-cost airlines. The site has kept its isolation: no station, few buses, and narrow country roads for the last few kilometres before the terminal.

Allow a little over an hour more on the road via the A57. The driver can take you straight to central Düsseldorf, the exhibition centre or your hotel.
