Your ticket says 'Paris', but the plane takes off from Tillé, in the Oise, around 80 kilometres by road north of the French capital. Paris Beauvais Airport specialises in low-cost flights to Europe and Morocco, with schedules stretching from early morning to late evening. From Brussels, its location has one advantage: no Paris ring road to contend with, as the route goes via Mons and Valenciennes, bypasses Amiens and heads down the A16 to Beauvais. The drawback: no railway line reaches the terminal, and public transport from Belgium involves several changes.
Timing is the real headache. Both terminals close at night and only reopen between 03:15 and 04:30, depending on the day and the terminal, so arriving the night before and waiting on a bench is not an option. For a 06:30 take-off, you work backwards: be at the terminal around 04:30, leave Brussels at about 01:15. The driver arrives at the agreed time, puts the suitcases in the boot, and you can sleep as the E19, the A2 and the motorways of Picardy slip by. The same applies on the way back: landing at around 23:00 brings you home to Belgium in the dead of night.
For a group, the maths changes considerably. Is Beauvais airport really in Paris?+
No. It is in Tillé, just north of the town of Beauvais, around 80 kilometres by road from Paris; the name 'Paris Beauvais' refers to the area served rather than the location. For a departure from Belgium, that is rather good news: the route never goes near the capital and avoids its traffic jams. The journey from the Grand-Place is still 280 kilometres, or about three hours without traffic, which you should factor in before buying a cheap ticket.
Can we arrive early and wait in the terminal?+
Not at night. The terminals close in the late evening and reopen between 03:15 and 04:30, depending on the day and the terminal; the airport states that they are closed to the public in the meantime. It is therefore best to arrive shortly after opening. When booking, give the flight time and the terminal, T1 or T2: your departure from Brussels is set accordingly, with no pointless wait in the car park.
