Caves of Han: the underground Ardennes in a day
Even in the middle of July, bring a jumper. In the Cave of Han, the air stays cool all year round, at about ten degrees, and the humidity makes it feel colder. That is the first tip for this day in the underground Ardennes, just under an hour and a half from Brussels on the E411. The second concerns logistics: between the cave, the wildlife park and the village of Han-sur-Lesse, you get around on foot or with the estate's own vehicles. Your driver drops you off in the morning, looks after your change of clothes and picks you up at the end of the day.
Beneath the hill, it was the Lesse itself that carved out the chambers: the river flows underground through the massif, and the tour runs alongside it for part of the way. A guide from the estate accompanies each group, and the Origin sound-and-light show punctuates the descent. Photos are allowed at the stops in the large chambers, without flash. There are no toilets underground, a detail that matters with children, and the many steps call for sturdy closed shoes.
The wildlife park, 250 hectares of hills and woodland, is home to European species such as the wolf, the lynx, the bear and Przewalski's horse, which you can see on foot or from the safari car on a guided tour of about an hour and a half. The village of Han-sur-Lesse, on the riverbank, then offers its terraces and restaurants. You can add Rochefort or another stop in the Famenne to the programme, but a full day at Han is plenty: you leave with tired legs and a head full of caverns.

Planning your day trip
What should we wear for the cave?+
A jacket or a warm jumper, even in summer: the temperature stays constant all year round, at about 9 °C, with high humidity. Add closed walking shoes, as the route includes several hundred steps. Leave a dry change of clothes for the children in the car, to collect after the visit: your driver looks after the bags until you return.
Can we take a pushchair or a wheelchair into the cave?+
No: pushchairs are not allowed because of the steps, and the estate recommends a baby carrier; the underground route is not accessible to people with reduced mobility either. The wildlife park, on the other hand, can be explored by safari car, provided you can board unaided and remain seated for about an hour and a half. If your group has differing needs, some of you can take the safari while the others go underground.
Découverte or Traversée: which tour should we choose?+
The Découverte (Discovery), which takes about an hour and a quarter, covers the finest chambers and suits families and busy days alike. The Traversée (Crossing), two hours and 510 steps, goes deeper into the massif: it is the most complete tour, best kept for keen walkers. Both options include the Origin show and are booked online, with fixed departure times depending on the season.
Is the estate open all year round?+
Not every day. The high season offers frequent departures, sometimes every hour, but from mid-November until February openings become less frequent, with some periods limited to weekends. Check the estate's calendar before choosing a date; we then set your departure time from Brussels to match the first available tour slot, so that you do not have to wait on site.
