Gare du Nord – Brussels: the road when the railway lets you down

A strike notice, a cancelled Eurostar, too many suitcases for the Paris Métro: between Gare du Nord and Brussels, the car sometimes has the edge, in either direction.

When the car takes over from the train

When everything runs smoothly, Eurostar links Paris and Brussels in under an hour and a half and is hard to beat. But the railway has its bad days: industrial action announced in France or Belgium, a train cancelled at the last minute, packed carriages after an incident, the last evening departure missed. On those days, a car with a chauffeur turns a day in jeopardy into three and a half hours on the road, from one address to another, with no queue at the ticket office and no new ticket to buy.

The road also makes sense in normal times. An elderly traveller with a heavy suitcase, a family with a pushchair and child seats, a professional carrying equipment or samples: all of them avoid the stairs, the Paris Métro to the station and the search for a taxi on arrival. For a group, a single vehicle takes everyone, with no need to find seats together on the same train on a busy day.

  • Strike notice on the French or Belgian network
  • Train cancelled or full after a disruption
  • Arriving in Paris after the last departure for Brussels
  • Bulky luggage, a pushchair or professional equipment
Key points
  • A fallback in the event of a strike, a cancelled train or a missed connection.
  • Door to door: from your home in Brussels to Gare du Nord, or from a Paris hotel to your front door.
  • Drop-off according to the access rules in force, usually in the station's underground car park.
  • Suitcases, pushchairs and professional equipment loaded once, unloaded on arrival.
  • Per-kilometre price shown before confirmation, unchanged if Paris traffic makes the journey longer.

From Brussels to Gare du Nord

In this direction, the car is often a way to make sure you catch a train leaving Paris: a Eurostar to London when direct services from Brussels are disrupted, a TGV to another French region, or a meeting a stone's throw from the station. The route follows the E19 to Mons, the A2 via Valenciennes, then the A1 to Porte de la Chapelle. The last few kilometres, between the motorway and the 10th arrondissement, are the most unpredictable, so the departure time includes a buffer for them.

On arrival, the area around the station has been redesigned: Rue de Dunkerque, in front of the forecourt, is now largely reserved for bicycles, buses and residents, and cars usually drop their passengers in the station's underground car park. Your driver follows the access arrangements in force, leaves you with your luggage and shows you the way to the concourse. For London, the Eurostar terminal is upstairs, where you go through security and border control before reaching the platform.

From Gare du Nord to Brussels

The reverse scenario arises when a traveller learns at the station that their train has been cancelled, or that there is no departure to Brussels until the next day. The car then sets off from the Brussels area: allow for the drive there, about three and a half hours, before the meeting in Paris. When industrial action is announced several days in advance, booking early means the driver can be there at a time that suits you, rather than chasing a slot on the day.

You can meet at the station, with the driver parking in the underground car park and coming to find you at the agreed point, or directly at your hotel, office or meeting place in Paris, which spares you the crush on the forecourt. Online booking closes three hours before departure; for anything more urgent, call the team or message them on WhatsApp using the buttons on this page, and they will tell you whether a driver can set off in time.

04

Three and a half hours on board

On a route like this, the comfort of the vehicle matters more than in town. An E-Class or Audi A6 from the Business class lets you work in peace or sleep. For groups, the Van class takes up to seven passengers and the Van Business class six, luggage included. A break at a service area on the A1 or E19 is simply a matter of asking your driver. The price, calculated per kilometre, is shown before you confirm, and it does not change if traffic jams on the Périphérique make the journey longer.

Leaving Paris late in the evening means arriving in Brussels in the middle of the night: your driver drops you outside your door, bags out of the boot, whereas the train would have left you at Brussels-Midi at an hour when public transport is thinning out. In the other direction, leaving Brussels before dawn gets you to Paris for an early meeting or the first Eurostar to London, without a hotel stay the night before.

Frequently asked questions

Paris Gare du Nord

My Paris–Brussels Eurostar has been cancelled: can you come and collect me?+

Yes, bearing in mind the distance: the driver sets off from the Brussels area and first has to cover about 300 km to reach you. Make your request as soon as the cancellation is announced, stating whether you are waiting at Gare du Nord or at your Paris hotel. When your preferred departure time is less than three hours away, the online form is no longer open: a call or a message to the team will tell you when a driver can be there.

Where does the car drop passengers off at Gare du Nord?+

Usually in the station's underground car park. Traffic around the forecourt has been reorganised, and Rue de Dunkerque, in front of the façade, now has little room for cars; your driver applies the access rules in force on the day you travel, unloads your bags there and shows you the way to the concourse. For a Eurostar to London, leave time for the checks upstairs.

Is the car more expensive than the train?+

It all depends on how many of you are travelling. Shown before confirmation and calculated per kilometre for this kind of distance, the price is for the whole vehicle, not per passenger. For one or two people, the train is generally cheaper; for four, six or seven travellers with luggage, the gap narrows considerably. Try it out in the booking form so that you can make an informed comparison.

Can we leave Brussels to catch a Eurostar to London from Paris?+

Yes, it is a fallback when direct trains between Brussels and London are disrupted but departures from Paris are still running. Allow about three and a half hours on the road, plus a buffer for the approach via the Périphérique and time for the security and border checks that Eurostar requires before its cut-off. The team will agree with you a departure time that fits your train.
