On the road to Nieuwpoort, five kilometres from the centre of Ostend, a single terminal is all Ostend-Bruges Airport needs: the drop-off zone faces the entrance and the check-in desks are only a few steps away. Its activity is split between cargo and holiday flights, almost all of them heading for the sun: the Canary Islands, the Costa Blanca, the Costa del Sol, the Balearics, Crete, Rhodes, Antalya or Hurghada. This small scale appeals to families, who find it less daunting than a large international hub. For Brussels residents, the only real drawback is the distance: nearly 120 kilometres of road separate the Grand-Place from the terminal.
Then there is the timing. For a 07:00 departure to Tenerife, with check-in two hours earlier, you need to leave Brussels at around 03:00. The driver rings the bell at the agreed time, loads the suitcases and lets you doze through the hour and a half of motorway to the coast along the E40. At Ostend, they unload the luggage in the drop-off zone while the still-sleepy children put their jackets on.
Some families combine the flight with a stay at the seaside: a few days in Knokke-Le Zoute or De Haan before flying out, or a week on the seafront after returning from the Canaries. The transfer fits around this schedule and need not start or end in Brussels. Bruges is half an hour from the airport and Knokke about three-quarters of an hour, and the driver can take you to either before or after your flight. For four or five travellers with checked suitcases, beach bags and a pushchair, the Van remains the most comfortable choice, with room for seven passengers.

Why fly from Ostend when Zaventem is so close to Brussels?+
Most often because the package holiday or holiday flight you have chosen leaves from there, on the date you want. The small, single terminal also makes check-in easier to manage with tired children or elderly parents, and your stay can be extended at the coast. On the other hand, the drive takes ninety minutes without traffic, compared with around twenty for Zaventem: a private transfer makes that distance bearable, even in the middle of the night.
Family holiday: which vehicle should we book for checked luggage?+
For two adults, two children and their checked suitcases, the Van offers the most space: seven seats and room for six suitcases. A sedan, limited to two suitcases, is rarely enough for a week in the sun. When booking, mention the pushchair, any golf bag for the Costa del Sol and the seats you need, giving each child's weight: the loading is then planned before the driver rings your doorbell.
