Maastricht and Valkenburg: Limburg's hills and caves
Anyone who thinks the Netherlands is entirely flat has never climbed the streets of Valkenburg. In the far south of the country, Limburg rolls out in wooded hills, and beneath those hills run galleries dug over the centuries to extract marl, the soft, pale limestone from which the region was built. This day trip explores both levels: a morning in Maastricht, above ground, then an afternoon in Valkenburg, between the ruins of a hilltop castle and the caves that burrow beneath it. The drive to Maastricht takes a little over an hour and a half; Valkenburg is then only a quarter of an hour away.
In Maastricht, whose centre is best explored on foot, the car leaves you on the edge of the old town and the morning begins on the Vrijthof, between the Basilica of St Servatius and the red tower of St John's Church. From there, a few streets lead to the former Dominican church, now a bookshop beneath its medieval vaults, then to the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein and the Jekerkwartier. In this district, the Helpoort, built around 1229, is said to be the oldest surviving town gate in the Netherlands. Lunch on a terrace, then the car picks you up near the Maas.
Valkenburg aan de Geul fills the afternoon. On the Heunsberg stand the remains of the only hilltop castle in the Netherlands, the largest castle ruin in the country; beneath it, the Fluweelengrot, linked to the castle by old escape tunnels, can be visited with a guide, at a cool temperature that barely changes from winter to summer. A few streets away, the Gemeentegrot preserves charcoal drawings, carvings and fossils in the marl, to be explored on foot or aboard a little train. At the end of the day, you climb back into the car, shoes still white with marl dust, for the drive home to Brussels.

Which cave should we choose in Valkenburg?+
The Fluweelengrot, beneath the ruins, is visited with a guide and can be combined with the castle on a joint ticket: it is the choice for those who want to go from ramparts to tunnels. Check the language of the tours, which are often in Dutch. The Gemeentegrot shows charcoal drawings, carvings and fossils, with a walking tour of about an hour or a half-hour ride on the little train.
Carnival, cycle racing, Christmas markets: when is Limburg at its busiest?+
During Carnival, Maastricht lives to the rhythm of the parades, its centre becomes very crowded and some Valkenburg sites change their opening hours. On the day of the Amstel Gold Race, the spring cycling classic that takes in Limburg's climbs, several roads in the area are closed. From mid-November to the end of December, Valkenburg holds Christmas markets in its caves: the atmosphere is well worth it, but expect crowds to match.
Does Maastricht have its own tunnels too?+
Yes. Beneath Mount Saint Peter (Sint-Pietersberg), south of the city, the Grotten Noord and the Zonneberg caves form a labyrinth that was also dug into the marl. The Grotten Noord, where works of art were sheltered during the Second World War, can be visited with a guide, sometimes combined with Fort Sint Pieter. Enough to devote the whole day to Maastricht, if you would rather keep the driving to a minimum.
Are the caves suitable for young children?+
Yes, with a few precautions. The Gemeentegrot's half-hour little train spares young legs, and the coolness of the galleries calls for a jumper even in high summer. For the journey, tell us in your request how much each child weighs: the right seats are fitted before departure, and the snacks travel in the boot.
