Keukenhof and the flower fields of the Bollenstreek
Keukenhof opens for only seven to eight weeks a year, from the second half of March to the first half of May. Miss it, and you will have to wait until the following spring. This narrow window shapes the whole plan: fix the date early, book an entry time slot and reach Lisse ahead of the coach tours. With about two and a half hours on the road, that means leaving Brussels at dawn. You finish your night's sleep in the back while your driver skirts Antwerp and Rotterdam, and you see the first fields of colour just as you open your eyes.
Getting in at 08:00, when the gates open, transforms the visit: according to the park itself, the paths are quieter before 10:30 and after 16:00, and Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are less busy than weekends. Tickets are sold online for a specific date and time slot; choose the first one. Crocuses, daffodils and hyacinths open the season, then the tulips take over as the weather allows; the flowering report published by Keukenhof lets you follow their progress week by week.
Around the park, the Bollenstreek, between Leiden and Haarlem, unrolls its bulb fields in long bands of colour. You do not walk into these fields, which are working crops, but you can photograph them from the road, or hire a bike near the park entrance to explore the lanes. In the afternoon, Leiden reminds you that the story began in its botanical garden, where Carolus Clusius (Charles de l'Écluse), a botanist born in Arras, planted tulips in the late sixteenth century; Haarlem answers with its Grote Markt and St Bavo's Church. You head home in the evening.

Planning your day trip
When are the tulips at their best?+
The park itself declines to give a fixed date: it all depends on how cold and sunny the end of winter has been. As a rule, the early flowers dominate at the start of the season and the tulips take over later, often around mid-April in the fields. Check Keukenhof's flowering report before booking and, if possible, add one or two alternative dates in the quote form.
Why leave Brussels so early?+
Because visitor numbers rise sharply between 10:30 and 16:00, when the coach tours arrive. Leaving at about 06:00, you reach Lisse for opening time and enjoy two or three quieter hours. If a dawn start puts you off, the alternative is to spend the morning in Leiden or Haarlem, then aim for the last entry slots, as the park closes at 19:00.
Can we walk in the flower fields?+
No. The Bollenstreek fields are bulb crops, and Keukenhof points out that trampling them damages the harvest. Photos are taken from the road or the paths; your driver finds somewhere to stop without holding up the traffic. To go further, the bike hire near the entrance lets you ride the lanes between the fields while the car waits.
Should we avoid the area on the day of the flower parade?+
That depends on what you want. On a Saturday in April, the Bollenstreek flower parade covers some forty kilometres from Noordwijk to Haarlem by way of Lisse, and the roads in the area are then very congested. If you would like to see the floats go by, we build the day around the parade; otherwise, it is better to choose another date, checking the programme the organisers publish each year.
